Flourosis or fluoride stains treatment

A common dental habit that all of us practice is brushing. We all brush the teeth with suitable toothpaste. Most toothpaste in turn contains a substance known as fluoride. This substance is initially present in our body and it significantly contributes to the strengthening of teeth. In this regard, applying fluoride toothpaste is beneficial.

As it is said, too much of anything is bad. This is very much applicable in the case of fluoride application also. The application of too much Fluoride can cause an issue known as fluorosis. This condition affects the enamel of tooth. The most critical side-effect is that the damage on the enamel is permanent. When fluorosis affects the teeth, it becomes more porous. The teeth then begin to degrade away. The condition also leads to the formation of stains in the teeth. Fluoride stains are very hard to treat, if they are present for a considerable time.

Mild fluorosis and associated stains can be rectified through a set of conservative procedures. Some of the techniques that can be used for the treatment include the following:

  • Teeth Whitening procedure to whiten the fluorosis stains.
  • Use of Dental Crowns.
  • Bonding: It is the process in which the tooth is coated with a resin so that it bonds to the enamel.
  • Use of veneers: They are appliances that are used for covering the front portion of the teeth.
